Bremen is one of those cities where, if the weather is on your side, you can hop on your (or rented) bike and ride to the horizon, in the most wild-wild-west-style you can possibly manage.
One of those far away in the sunny horizon destinations is the little town of Fischerhude in Lower Saxony. It is about 21 Km away from Bremen city center, and it is really well connected for both bikes and cars alike.
And what's there to do in such a place you may ask. Well, Fischerhude is known for its prolific breeding of creative minds, painters have come to this little town to found an artists' retreat where names such as Otto Modersohn and Clara Westhoff lived and worked. Some of them lucky chaps even made it to work for the King of Bavaria back in the day! So, one of the many things this charming town has to offer is Museums and Galleries. Including a house museum, where you can see in real life the way they used to live in Fischerhude back in the day, in a similar way to Aarhus' Den Gamle By (post about it coming soon!). Most of them completely free of charge (donations appreciated)
If art isn't your thing, you can always rent a pony around the corner, or take riding lessons. Or simply take a stroll through the adorable streets of Fischerhude. House-watching is awesome here, most buildings in town date from the late 1800s so a delight to the eyes!
You can also sit by the river with a nice book with the wind in the willows and the quacking ducks as soundtrack to your afternoon.
But what's definitely worth the trip on its own is Das Café in Brettmanns Hof. It is located in a restored old farm house beautifully decorated, with a lovely terrace in the back garden.
Das Café in Brettmanns Hof offers all sorts of home-made milk products, from coffee and hot chocolate to the most delicious ice-cream I've tried in a while. Also cakes and pies are a popular choice among the locals.
And to top it off, the service was superb...what else could you wish for? Sun, of course!
After you've filled your belly with ice you can pop into any of the many antique, hand-crafts or art stores around town before heading back home.
Have you ever been to Fischerhude? What did you enjoy the most? Is there any towns like this one close to where you are?? Share all your tips and anecdotes down in the comments, can't wait to read from you!!
